Riley's Quilt

This is my first post as the goth quilter and I've got to say I'm probably really letting my name down. I promise my other works in progress are a lot more goth! I've decided to go ahead posting this quite cheery quilt though because I'm spending a lot of time on it, and I have the most progress to show for it right now.

The quilt I'm working on is called Riley's Quilt. Which means I've started yet another quilt before finishing the previous ones. Oops. My Moncarrapacho and skull quilt are still progressing but I wanted a project that was smaller and that I could actually finish before the year is done. I saw the tutorial for the Missouri Quilt company's quilt as you go hexagons and fell in love. They're so simple to make and really showcase the fabric from my charm square pack.

I'm using the Bee Grateful line by Deb Strain as well as an older charm pack that I can't find the name of. For the border I'm using all black. I like the Bee Grateful line but the charm pack doesn't have the level of contrast I like in a quilt. I think having pure black borders and some black accents really helps the quilt pop!

This Quilt is called Riley's quilt, because I'm giving it to my best friend Riley. She loves insects and frogs and the like, but unfortunately only bees are popular fabric choices among quilters. I would totally make her a toad or beetle quilt if I could.

My progress as of 1/25/2020:

I did want to put some personality/my own spin on this quilt so I've been creating some of my own patterns and hand sewing them before machine quilting them. See below:

I also made a secret pocket in the quilt! I love it and hope Riley gets some use out of it. The pocket is kind of inconvenient for me at the moment though. It's the reason I'm not sewing the blocks together yet. I want to make sure I'm orienting the pocket the correct way.
